Johan & Peewee:

Peyo was writing Joan & Peewee stories before he started on the smurfs. In fact the smurfs first appeared in a Johan & Peewee story called "The Smurfs and the Magic Flute" and their popularity was such that they soon eclipsed their human friends. Johan seems to be Johan in many languages although in the American version of the film "The Smurfs and the Magic Flute" he is known as John. Peewee is, confusingly, known as William in the film, but as Pirlouit in French and Pfiffikus in German!
